台灣台南人。台南一中畢業後，保送成功大學電機系，後來因為志趣不合，改考入台大歷史系。1968年畢業，並於第二年到美國耶魯大學攻讀博士課程。1974年取得博士學位，即前往香港中文大學任教。1991年應聘到紐約城市大學的市立學院（City College , The City University of New York）亞洲研究系擔任教授。現任該校歷史系教授堅亞洲研究課程主任。

李教授專攻中國教育史。英文著作包括Government Education and Examinations in Sung China（1985）及Education in Tradition China , A History（2000）。李教授對中西文化交流及史學思想的比較研究也有興趣，著有（讀史的樂趣）-1992、（西洋史學名著選讀）-2000、（西洋史學名著選讀）-1983、China and Europe , Images and Influences in Sixteenth ti Eighteenth Centuries-1991等書。
