• 1907　5月24日，出生于南达科他州的休伦
• 1911　举家迁往南达科他州的苏费尔斯
• 1923　进入新罕布什尔州菲力普斯·埃克塞特学校
• 1925　进威斯康星大学
• 1927　转入哈佛大学
• 1929—1931　获得罗兹奖学金，就读于英国牛津大学巴利奥尔学院
• 1932　2月到中国为其博士论文做研究；初夏，在北京与威尔玛·迪尼奥·卡侬(Wilma，Denio·Cannon)结婚
• 1933—1935　任北京清华大学讲师
• 1935　圣诞节离开中国返美
• 1936　秋，在哈佛大学任教
• 1941　8月，进华盛顿特区情报协调局远东组工作
• 1942　被情报协调局(1942年6月改名为战略情报局)派往重庆
• 1943　年底返回华盛顿，调陆军情报局远东部
• 1945　9月，到中国，为美国新闻处工作
• 1946　秋，重回哈佛大学任教
• 1948　《美国与中国》由哈佛大学出版社出版
• 1952　3月10—11日遭控告，到麦卡伦委员会(参议院的国内安全小组委员会)进行陈述
• 1952—1953　以古根海姆基金会学者的身份在日本访问
• 1953　《中国沿海贸易与外交：1842—1854年条约口岸的开放》一书，由哈佛大学出版社出版
• 1956　任新成立的东亚问题研究中心(哈佛大学)主任(1961年更名为东亚研究中心，1977年又更名为费正清东亚研究中心)
• 1958　当选为美国亚洲研究协会主席
• 1960　第一次赴苏联，参加国际东方学家代表大会
• 1960　《东亚：伟大的传统》[与赖肖尔(Edwin，O．Reischauer)合作]由洪顿·米夫林出版社出版
• 1965　《东亚：近代的变革》[与赖肖尔、克雷格(Albert M．Craig)合著]由洪顿·米夫林出版社出版
• 1966　开始编著《剑桥中国史》，和特威切特(Denis Twitchett)共同主编(3月10日)在参议院外交委员会就对华政策作证
• 1967　在剑桥①举行六十大寿庆祝会；费维恺(Albert Feuerwerker)、莫菲(RhoadsMurphey)、芮玛丽(Mary Wright)等主编的《中国近现代史入门》(由加州大学出版社出版)一书以作贺礼
• 1968　当选为美国历史协会主席
• 1972　夏天，与威尔玛重访中国
• 1973　5月，辞去东亚研究中心主任，任哈佛东亚问题研究委员会主席
• 1977　3月，为哈佛大学作最后一次讲课
• 1979　感恩节，几乎致命的心脏病发作
• 1982　《心系中国》由哈勃一娄出版社出版
• 1991　9月12日完成《中国：一个新的历史》书稿交哈佛大学出版社；两天之后于9月14日在剑桥去世
